What Is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach that uses the principles of learning and motivation to bring about a meaningful and positive change in behavior.

ABA also helps people acquire or improve skills such as communication, social, play and leisure, self-help, and academics. It does this by breaking down behaviors into smaller parts and determining the function of each behavior.

What to Expect

Not all ABA sessions look the same; it all depends on your child's needs. However, there are times when ABA may look like little more than play, other times when it may look like working at a desk, and sometimes when it takes place at the grocery store. We model our sessions so that our children can get the most support possible based on their area of need.

ABA sessions are often run by Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) supervised by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or a Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA).

Who Can Provide ABA?

BCBA (Board-Certified Behavior Analyst):

BCBAs hold supervisor roles. They have a Master’s degree and have met the supervision standards set by the BACB (Behavior Analysts Certification Board). BCBAs will perform an assessment and be responsible for creating an individualized plan for your child. They also provide training for both caretakers and RBTs working directly with children.

BCaBA (Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts):

BCaBAs have at least a bachelor’s degree and have met the supervision standards set by the BACB. Under the direct supervision of a BCBA, they can perform most of the duties that a BCBA can do while also working directly (1:1) with children.

RBT (Registered Behavior Technician):

A paraprofessional who works under the close supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. They are primarily responsible for the direct implementation of ABA. They do not design intervention or assessment plans.
